Suez Canal Conteainer Terminal (SCCT)

In the short time that it has been operating Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) has managed to successfully establish itself as the transshipment centre for the Eastern Mediterranean, increasing shipping and exporting opportunities for local and international businesses. The terminal holds a strategic location and operates in partnership with an outstanding international affiliate; APM Terminals.

In 1999 the Government of Egypt (GoE) tendered a concession for a pioneering container terminal in the new East Port Said Port. The concession was successfully bid for by SCCT, and an agreement was signed.

SCCT began operating in 2004 and has since efficiently operated a terminal that delivers reliable and cost effective services and takes full advantage of its outstanding location to attract major shipping lines. It is fast becoming the leading container hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and is still growing; phase two of the project which will double SCCT’s capacity is now underway (first part operational January 2010).

SCCT currently employs 1200 employees and hundreds more indirectly through subcontractors and dealing with various other sectors. Phase two of the construction project will result in the creation of 1100 jobs and once it is completed the number of people directly employed by SCCT will rise to 2300 with total investment of 750 million USD.

SCCT occupies an area of 600,000 m2 and utilizes 12 Super-Post Panamax quay cranes, 37 Rubber Gantry cranes and has an estimated capacity of 2.55 million TEUs. SCCT has handled more than 4,230,000 TEUs since October 2004 and has a world-class productivity of over 30 quay crane moves per hour; the fastest in the Mediterranean.

In 2006 SCCT propelled Port Said into the fastest growing port in the world measured by a percentage growth of 101%, making it the third largest container terminal in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

SCCT is an Egyptian joint venture company, the majority (55%) shareholding of SCCT is held by APM Terminals (APMT), COSCO Pacific, 20%, with local shareholding percentages (Suez Canal Authority 10%, National Bank of Egypt 5% and Egyptian Private Sector 10%)

APMT is an independent company within the AP Moller- Maersk Group and is one of the largest operators of container terminals worldwide, serving 60 of the world’s most important shipping lines.
